ABOUT THE FOUNDATION
The foundation for children at risk was created in 1990 due to the total lack of a therapeutic center for infant autistic children in the greater Tel Aviv area. Thus in 1990 a group of parents of autistic children age two to three joined together with the Tel Aviv Mental Health Center for the purpose of creating the first therapeutic kindergarten for infant autistic children.
The kindergarten was opened in September 1990, only to be destroyed four months later during the golf war by a scud missile.
All specialist in the field of child development stress the following fact, that the most crucial time in the lives of the autistic children is upon diagnosis and if, and only if the children will receive massive treatment (from age two) by a multidisciplinary team of professionals, then, and only then, they stand a chance to improve dramatically.
In Israel, the Government assumes responsibility for the treatment of a child from age six.
The Foundation's for Children at Risk main purpose, was and still is, to bridge this crucial gap of those three to four years of treatment by the following ways:
1. Fund raising campaign in order to create the first
therapeutic kindergarten in Tel Aviv, MISSION
ACCOMPLISHED.
2. Efforts to force the government to participate financially in the treatment of these
children, Partly accomplished.
The Foundation's efforts were successful, and we have managed to secure partial help from the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education. Great results were accomplished with the children and due to our therapeutic success, Israeli media, i.e. television and newspapers, presented the Foundation's efforts.
The foundation has built and staffed two kindergartens in Tel Aviv, two in the city of Holon and one class for our graduates who had broken out of autism: "Elcharizi" elementary school in Tel Aviv, For which this school had won the President's award for education. In addition to those programs, we have a program for infants ages 1.5 to 3 years old, children who cannot be placed in the kindergarten for nine hours continuously every day due to their very young age, and due to shortage of space. The foundation supports 3 more therapeutic centers in Jerusalem, Maccabim, and Mesilot in Beit Shean, In total we treat and support 102 children.
